NATURE CONSERVATOR (MARINE)
Betty’s Bay MPA and Bot River Estuary
(3-year contract)
Salary R241 747 per annum (TCoE) – Level 8
Responsibilities:
• Provide assistance with day to day management of the Betty’s Bay MPA & Bot River Estuary and report to the Conservation Manager
• Data collection and capturing, monitoring and assisting with research projects
• Supervision of staff
• Carry out administrative duties
• Perform law enforcement duties and provide support to Environmental Crime Investigation Services in the marine environs
• Ensure compliance with relevant legislation
• Co-ordination of biodiversity management activities
• Improve publicity and public buy-in
• Co-ordinate capacity building of MPA / reserve personnel
• Increase landowner/ community commitment to conservation of the marine environment
• Establish & Maintain partnerships (e.g. Liaise with MCM compliance staff for joint operations.)
• Local biodiversity conservation in LED
• Assist in Compiling and updating of the management plan, master plan, strategic plan and APO for the MPA
• Adherence to all Health & Safety requirements.
• Assist with environmental education, extension services and interpretation
• Maintenance and control of infrastructure and other assets.
• Assist with eco-tourism and community conservation
• Ensure expenditure control, asset management
Requirements:
• A diploma Fisheries Resource Management or relevant qualification
• At least three years appropriate conservation experience within the marine environment
• Knowledge of environmental legislation (e.g. MLRA, etc)
• Skippers License
• Peace Officer and/or Fisheries Control Officer
• Computer literacy (Windows, MS Office,)
• Proficiency in at least two of the official languages of the Western Cape
• Physical fitness to perform duties under physically demanding conditions
• A valid drivers license, ability to drive on 4x4 terrain
• Excellent interpersonal and communication and written skills
• Good Swimmer
• Willingness to work irregular hours, over time and to perform “stand-by” duties
• A valid EB drivers license
• Good interpersonal and communication and written skills
Recommended Competencies:
• Accredited MPA Management course
• EMI
• Commercial/Scientific Class IV Diver
• Firearm Competency Certificate
